Couple Finds Elderly Blind Dog in a Grave. Then They Realize the Hole Was Dug for Her

NEED TO KNOW

  • A couple was watching TV one night when they heard an animal crying
  • Around midnight, the husband went to investigate the sound
  • He stumbled upon his neighbor’s elderly dog lying in a pre-dug grave

One concerned neighbor took to Reddit after finding a dog that “accidentally” wandered into a hole, later to find out it was its own pre-dug grave.

The Redditor described living in a large suburban community surrounded by woods, where wildlife like foxes and bears are common. However, what they discovered one night was far more chilling than a typical wildlife encounter.

“Last night we heard super weird noises outside at 10:30,” the user wrote. “We were inside with the TV on but could hear a distinctive canine sound. It was definitely not the two yappy dogs that we are familiar with, and the other neighbors don’t have dogs.”

The user’s husband initially dismissed the sound as a fox, but as the cries continued, curiosity took over. Around midnight, he “heard the whining and crying” becoming “more urgent,” so he finally went to investigate.

He then called his wife for “help” after discovering “a blind and deaf dog stuck in a grave-sized hole with an engraved tombstone next to it.”

Lying helpless in the hole was a small, elderly dog wearing a pink sweater. Next to her was a rock with the name “Chrissy” engraved on it.

The couple had never seen this dog before, nor had they heard of anyone in the neighborhood missing one.

After hours of crying in the cold, the couple brought the dog inside. “We grab towels and sit with her in our bathroom until she finally falls asleep. For only about an hour and a half,” the wife wrote. “After that, she wakes up and begins yelping and pacing. All. Night. Long.”

Despite their best efforts to comfort the dog, she seemed confused, exhausted, and panicked. The family checked neighborhood social media sites for missing pet posts but found nothing. They finally reported the dog to their local shelter and waited until morning to investigate further.

In the morning, the husband noticed lights on in the house across the community path. Hoping to find answers, he approached the homeowners.

“It is their dog. AND IT IS A LITERAL PET CEMETERY. AND…It. Is. Her. Grave,” the user continued. The owners explained that the dog, Jody, had stopped eating and drinking weeks before. Believing she was near death, they had dug a grave for her in their backyard.

However, she unexpectedly improved and was still alive. Then, Jody somehow escaped their home and ended up trapped inside the very hole that had been prepared for her. The Redditor questioned whether it was a coincidence or something much more eerie that the elderly dog found its way into the grave.

“So…do we think that it’s just a coincidence that this blind, deaf, and elderly dog was able to escape her house unnoticed and accidentally get herself trapped in her own grave?” the user asked, noting that if they could hear Jody whining from across the street, then surely the owners must have heard her as well.

What made the story even more haunting was the realization that the gravestone wasn’t even Jody’s. Another dog named Chrissy is buried next to the pre-dug grave, but Jody’s headstone hadn’t come in yet.
