One response vet ‘hates’ when dog owners are told their pet is overweight

A vet has shared a common response he hears from dog owners when he breaks the news to them that their pet is overweight – and it’s safe to say he doesn’t appreciate it

A veterinarian has expressed his frustration at a common reaction he encounters when informing pet owners that their dog is overweight. Dogs, in all their varied shapes and sizes, require a significant commitment from their owners, including regular health check-ups, daily exercise, and constant love and affection.

If these responsibilities are not met, it can result in an unhappy and potentially unhealthy dog. Each breed of dog has an ideal weight range for optimal health and wellbeing, and it’s important for owners to ensure their pet sticks within those parameters. The PDSA warns that overweight or obese dogs face a higher risk of developing numerous health issues, including arthritis, diabetes, back problems, Cushing’s disease, urinary incontinence, certain types of cancer, and more, which could ultimately shorten their lifespan.

He also shares light-hearted dancing videos reflecting on various situations he encounters in his work. In a recent post, the vet humorously highlighted what often happens when he discusses a dog’s weight with their owner.

In the video, the vet acts out the awkward moment while music plays in the background. Overlaid on top of the footage, he wrote: “Your dog is a little overweight. I think he needs to be on a diet.”

He then included the owner’s reply: “You’re right, doctor. He’s fat, just like his mom.”

In his post caption, Dr Anwary quipped: “Ummm I don’t know what you want me to say to that… if I agree I’m totally in trouble!” He then confirmed this scenario “actually happened” to him.

Social media users were quick to share their experiences in the comments. One shared: “My senior dog was a bit overweight and the vet was like ‘yeah he’s healthy but he could stand to lose a couple kg’ and I was like ‘yeah same’ and he looked at me weird”.

Another admitted: “my dog gained weight with me during my pregnancy, we are trying our best to get it off.”

A third suggested: “I think if people bring their own body weight into it you can just laugh”.

It’s important to remember that vets on social media are only offering general advice from their own experiences.

For specific concerns about your pets, always consult your vet for a professional assessment and tailored advice.

If considering dog ownership, thorough research is essential to ensure you’re ready for the commitment.

Not all dogs are ideal for first-time owners. Training may be required to manage certain behaviours in dogs.

It’s also worth looking into the advantages of adopting a pup or dog from a charity or local shelter, rather than purchasing from a breeder.

There are numerous animals longing for a permanent home with a family that will shower them with love and care.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
