COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Franklin County deputy shot and killed a dog that attacked his partner while trying to chase a suspect on Tuesday.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 2 p.m. when a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop. When the suspect reportedly got out of the car and ran, he left the driver’s side door open. A pit bull got out of the vehicle and bit one of the deputies in the face. The deputy’s partner discharged his firearm, shooting and killing the dog, according to the sheriff’s office.

The deputy will reportedly be OK and will go to a hospital for treatment.

The suspect was taken into custody and will face felony charges, the sheriff’s office says.

The incident is under investigation.
