Guinness World Records, celebrating its 70th anniversary, organized the playdate in Idaho Falls, ensuring that Pearl, who lives in Florida, wouldn’t have to travel by plane.
“Obviously, bringing the smallest dog in the world with the tallest dog in the world, there was a little bit of anxiety,” says Reggie’s owner, Sam Johnson Reiss. “He was very gentle, very, very kind to Pearl, as best as he could be.”
Reggie, whose full name is Reginald, became the tallest living male dog in the world in January 2025, weighing 145 pounds and standing a staggering 3-foot-3 at the withers. Sam Johnson Reiss, have had to adjust their home to accommodate Reggie’s extraordinary size. He often drinks directly from the kitchen sink, and training him to eat only from his bowl has been a challenge.
On the other hand, Pearl, born in September 2020, weighs just over a pound and stands at a mere 3.6 inches tall, which earned her the title of world’s shortest dog. Her petite size is almost as impressive as Reggie’s towering presence.
“She’s really demanding,” says Vanessa Semler, Pearl’s owner. “She’s strong, and opinionated, and she can tell you what she wants.”
The Unlikely Friendship of Reggie and Pearl
What makes this meeting even more heartwarming is how quickly the dogs hit it off. Reggie, who stands at over three feet tall, was initially hesitant about Pearl, but he soon proved to be gentle with the tiny dog. Both dogs enjoyed their time together in the house.
