Dog has hilarious reaction to wearing a leash the day after she’s rescued

A newly adopted rescue dog had her first experience of being on a leash, and it’s fair to say that there is work to be done.

In a video posted to TikTok by @kali.nina.rescues, a small but energetic pup by the name of Kali can be seen trying out her new collar and leash for the first time.

According to her owner’s account, Kali was living on the streets just prior to being rescued. However, to paraphrase an old saying, ‘you can take the dog out of the street but you can’t take the street out of the dog,’ and Kali did not appear to be keen on the idea of life on a leash.

In the June 15 clip, Kali can be seen springing up and down excitedly, with her human companion laughing while gently chastising her “crazy” behavior.

However, Kali’s new owner is not about to give up on teaching her new rescue dog good practices. She is right to do so as well. When adopting a dog, experts and animal lovers alike will tell you always to remember the 3-3-3 rule; three days, three weeks, three months.

It’s a simple rule that says it takes your dog three days to adjust to their new surroundings and way of life. During that time, new owners should try to give their pets space while establishing boundaries and routine early. Do not force your new dog to interact and, above all else, stay positive.

At three weeks in, the new dog will likely feel more settled and may even start to test those boundaries in place. Basic training can begin, but instructions need to be clear; reactions to misbehavior need to be minimal; and encouragement is needed in plentiful supply.

By three months, your dog should start to trust that they have their forever home and should understand the routine more. This is when the real bonding between dog and owner can begin, and training can be ramped up.

Organizations such as the Humane Society of Northern Texas consider the 3-3-3 rule important as it “emphasizes the need for patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement when bringing home a newly adopted dog.”

“Dogs are creatures of habit and routine, and they need time to adjust to new environments and build trust with their new family,” the society says.

Kali just needs time to adjust to her surroundings. The good news is that, in fellow rescue dog Nina, who was also adopted by Kali’s owners, she has the perfect friend and partner to help her through this period of adjustment.

Kali has plenty of other admirers, too, not least the thousands of viewers on TikTok who helped her video go viral with over 738,000 views. “Kali was raised by bunnies,” one posted, with another wrote that the pup was practicing a little “parkour” with her jumps.

“At least she is moving,” a third added. “My puppy just lays down and refuses to move a muscle.” A fourth, meanwhile, wrote: “I feel like we pick pets that match a part of us, she is the chaos side of you.”
