MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Nearly three dozen dogs, allegedly abused, are now at the City of Mobile Animal Shelter.
Thirty-four dogs were taken in on Tuesday, pushing it far past capacity.
City officials say a complaint at a home in Trinity Gardens led them to the animals, living in horrific conditions.
Now, there is an urgent plea for the community to adopt or foster to free up space at the shelter.
As of right now, no one is in custody.
City officials say that will likely change by the end of the week, with charges expected against those responsible.
While it’s unclear why so many dogs were being kept at the location, the conditions were inhumane.
The animals were all in various states of neglect, along with multiple other violations of the city’s code of ordinances, officials say.
Director of Animal Services Robert Bryant says what they found was horrific.
“On face value, it looked like a very, very large breeding operation, a backyard breeding operation,” Bryant said. “Several of the animals were being kept in what we call whelping pens. It’s kind of a boxed cage that breeders use to raise puppies in. Several of the dogs were tethered around the property.”
Four of the dogs had to be rushed to a vet for immediate treatment.
The majority of the dogs are terrier mixes, and shelter workers say their stories are heartbreaking.
“We don’t jump to impounding animals or taking animals away from people,” Bryant said. “We want to help them become better animal owners so that we don’t perpetuate the problem moving forward.”
Now, with 160 animals in their care, the shelter is pleading for people to come and adopt or foster.
“If you feel like it’s time for you to bring an animal home, or if you just want to foster for us to give us some time to get through this process, we would love to have you come out and take a look at what we do have,” Bryant said.
Because this is still an active investigation, there is no updated condition on those four dogs rushed to the vet.
