ABILENE, Texas — If you have been to Red Bud park, you have likely seen the prairie dog preserve.
Big Country Wildlife Rehabilitation Center said that they are currently treating these prairie dogs for a mange outbreak.
Mange is a skin disease that is caused by parasitic mites that burrow into the skin or live on the surface. Some of the symptoms include intense itching, hair loss, and redness.
Big Country Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is treating these animals with frontline spray and NexGard based on the average weight of the colony, doing weekly evaluations to monitor the progress, and they will be doing a follow up treatment three weeks from the first treatment.
Mange is contagious and can severely impact the prairie dog colony if left untreated.
