The Midlothian Fire Department shared that their beloved firehouse dog, Riggs, was struck by a vehicle on the highway and did not survive.
MIDLOTHIAN, Texas — Riggs, the Midlothian Fire Department’s firehouse dog who went missing, has died, the department shared on Facebook.
Riggs went missing over the weekend, prompting the department to offer a $1,000 reward for his safe return.
Unfortunately, in an update on Tuesday, the Midlothian Fire Department said Riggs was struck by a vehicle along U.S. Highway 287 and did not survive, the fire chief told WFAA.
“While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, we are incredibly thankful for the overwhelming support from our community,” the department said in its Facebook update. “From those who helped search, shared posts, handed out flyers, made donations, or simply kept Riggs in their thoughts—your kindness and compassion meant the world to us. Riggs was more than just a station dog—he was part of our family.”
Riggs had been the station dog for three years, the chief told WFAA in an interview.
“We will miss him deeply. Thank you again, Midlothian, for standing with us,” the fire department said.
The Midlothian Fire Department told WFAA that monetary donations in memory of Riggs can be made to the Midlothian Animal Shelter, located at 215 N. 8th Street, Midlothian, Texas, 76065 or items can be purchased for the shelter on Amazon here.
