Columbus police fatally shot an aggressive dog attacking another dog in North Linden on Sunday, prompting an internal investigation.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus Division of Police Chief Elaine Bryant released a statement and body camera video Monday on social media, a day after an officer fatally shot a dog in North Linden.
The statement comes after a post on social media regarding a Columbus police officer shooting a dog garnered thousands of views.
The incident happened on Sunday afternoon in the area of Arlington Avenue and Bremen Street. An officer is seen in the bodycam driving, pulling up to a woman and asking, “Is that your dog?”
She says it is.
Another officer in the passenger seat asks her if it was just running around and she responded, saying, “Nope. Always on a leash.”
The officer then asks if she saw any other dogs out in the area and the woman says, “Hopefully not. Are there?”
In the middle of the officer responding, the woman can be heard quickly saying, “Well, there’s one right there.” Shortly after, the officers get out of the cruiser and a dog can be seen running at the woman and her dog as the woman shouts.
The woman is then seen putting herself between the dogs, trying to get the attacking dog off of hers.
The officer, gun in hand, tells the woman to get back and let go of her dog.
Bryant said, “In an effort to stop the attack and protect both the leashed dog and its owner from further harm, an officer discharged their firearm, fatally striking the aggressive dog.”
After the attacking dog was shot, the woman quickly grabbed her dog and ran toward the sidewalk.
“We understand that any incident involving the use of force, especially involving animals, can be upsetting to the community. Our thoughts are with all those affected,” Bryant said.
Per police policy, an internal administrative investigation is being conducted to ensure that all appropriate policies and procedures were followed.
