WAUKESHA, Wis. — More than 140 shelter pets are flying to Wisconsin to find fur-ever homes.
The pets, which include dogs and cats, are coming from overcrowded shelters in Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee. They will initially be taken in by Humane Animal Welfare Society, or HAWS, Elmbrook Humane Society, Humane Society of Jefferson County and Washington County Humane Society.
The pets will take flight Tuesday morning out of New Orleans. The plane will stop in Blountville, Tennessee, to pick up more pets in need before heading to Wisconsin.
Some of the adoptable dogs and cats are coming from areas of Tennessee that were impacted by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. Unicoi County Animal Shelter’s facility was damaged and will undergo a renovation. Tennessee shelters in Washington County provided a sanctuary for lost pets and injured pets after the storms. Some pets in their care before the storms had to be relocated in order to make room for more pets in need.
All pets have been fully vetted and are health certified. Once they are in the care of their respective Wisconsin shelters, all adoptable pets will be evaluated and provided any needed medical care before being made available for adoption.
