PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (WPTV) – Three dogs are recovering in the care of a Florida rescue organization after authorities say their owner dragged them behind his pickup truck.
Lorenzo Franco-Alcocer, 40, was arrested April 22 after he dragged his three dogs behind his silver Chevrolet pickup truck, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. He is being charged with aggravated animal cruelty.
Big Dog Ranch Rescue saved Franco-Alcocer’s three dogs, who are on the road to recovery after suffering cuts and abrasions across their bodies, according to the rescue’s founder, Lauree Simmons.
“One of them is completely missing all of his skin, all of his paw pads. They’re getting the proper medication and love and care that they need,” Simmons said.
According to the arrest report, a witness recorded Franco-Alcocer driving about 15 to 20 miles per hour with the dogs tied behind his pickup truck. The suspect told deputies he tied the dogs up to the back of the truck for them to use the restroom and forgot they were there when he drove away for a work call.
Deputies later found the dogs whimpering in a crate, licking their paws.
“Then, after he was called out about it, he took the dogs home and did not take them to the vet. He put them in an outside crate,” Simmons said.
The dogs have been renamed Pirata, Nano and Chispa. Simmons says as soon as she heard about the case, the rescue jumped in to help the animals.
“We’re just hopeful that justice is served for them, and we can place them into loving homes that they deserve,” Simmons said.
Franco-Alcocer was released from jail the same day he was arrested after posting a $7,500 bond.
