WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Animal rescue groups from across Kansas helped rescue dozens of dogs from a home in Jewell County in north central Kansas.
The sheriff said animal agencies recovered 49 living dogs from the town of Esbon. Deputies also found numerous dogs already dead.
The rescuer called conditions inside the home “deplorable.” She said animals were covered in fleas and ticks and had attacked each other, possibly due to their lack of food and water.
The Humane Society of Kansas City took 30 of the dogs and said some will be ready for adoption by the end of the week.
That can be a very big financial burden,” Kansas City Humane Society president and CEO Sydney Mollentine said. “Worth it — 100 percent worth it. But we really are urging the community to rally around us and these dogs so that we can continue doing this life-saving work.”
Groups from Wichita, Newton and Hutchinson were called to assist with the rescue.
There’s no word so far on whether charges will be filed or how the investigation began.
