These Are the 16 Purse Brands Instyle Editors Are Wearing So Far in 2025

When it comes to choosing the best purse brand for your taste and lifestyle, you must first consider some key factors: budget, as you can find luxury designer handbags at a wide range of price points; aesthetic, as in how a bag will complement your overall wardrobe; and function, a.k.a. how you’ll use and hold the bag.

We tapped InStyle editors who are well-versed in purse shopping to narrow down some of the best brands. Stylists Tracy Shapoff and Ariel Tunnell, as well as midsize fashion blogger Marina Torres, also shared insights on how to pick the perfect bag. One piece of advice they all agreed upon? Find an everyday bag that’s quality enough to be an investment piece, retaining its value in case you want to sell it or pass it down to a loved one. From relatively new sustainable brands to legendary fashion houses that have churned out bags in iconic shapes, we’ve created a handy guide to the best purse brands of 2025.

Coach has a wide array of high-quality, on-trend bags at a reasonable price point, making it the all-around best purse brand. From reinventing its classics, such as the Rogue and the Tabby shoulder bag, to equipping each pouch with functional design elements, the brand offers undeniable luxury at a more accessible price tag than its counterparts. Although Coach was established in 1941, the New York-based brand has evolved through the years to appeal to the younger generation, featuring the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Camila Mendes, and Ariana Greenblatt in its campaigns. Coach bags are best for fashion-conscious shoppers who appreciate luxury at an attainable price point and seek bags in a wide range of colors and styles.

Kaelin Dodge, beauty writer: “While Coach’s purses are by no means cheap, they’re also rarely more than $500, and you’re getting beautiful, high-quality leather and great, durable designs.”

Christina Perrier, assistant editor: “My wallets, purses, and work totes are all from the brand. They have designs that are both sleek and timeless, as well as fun and bold. They’re great quality, and it always surprises me how much I can fit in the seemingly small purses.”

“I think Madewell makes affordable bags that are super timeless and classic, so you never have to worry about them being outdated. They are great about staying current with modern trends in a way that feels practical and cost-effective as a consumer,” says Tunnell. The high-quality leather is known for developing a patina over time, and Madewell is also known for its eco-friendly vegetable-tanned leather. The bags are best for those who love high-quality basics and practical designs. That being said, they do still incorporate trendy shapes and finishes that any fashion-conscious shopper would be looking for.

At Quince, quality isn’t a luxury—it’s a given. The brand makes high-quality products that rival ones released by top designer brands, and Quince’s are often a third of the cost. The bag selection is quite extensive, with over 100 genuine leather styles that run for less than $200. Founded by Sid Gupta and Sourabh Mahajan in 2018, Quince cuts through the noise by selling top-notch, sustainable, and ethically sourced products directly to shoppers. Whether you’d like a luxurious-looking evening purse or an everyday shoulder bag, you can find several dupes of fashion’s hottest styles at Quince.

Erika Reals, senior beauty editor: “Quince’s leather goods are produced in Leather Working Group-certified factories and tanneries. I would’ve guessed my bag costs way more than its price tag of $100, but that’s the beauty of Quince. I actually want to buy another bag from the brand soon.”

The first thing you’ll notice about the range of bags offered by French luxury brand Longchamp is the innovation in practical shapes and design. The label’s most iconic collections include the Le Pliage, which is great for travelers, students, and commuters given its durable canvas fabric, spacious interior, and timeless design; the Roseau, which is a smaller shoulder bag with the signature Longchamp bamboo toggle; and the Box-Trot, which has a clear equestrian vibe and is great for those who prefer a boxy crossbody. Longchamp is best known for its commitment to quality, classicism, and versatility. These bags are best for those looking to make a smart investment in an everyday bag that will last for years, but also stand out to fellow fashionistas who easily recognize the brand’s signature characteristics.

Belted bags have been everywhere, and Prada is to thank. Ever since the brand debuted the Buckle Handbag in its Spring 2024 collection, the who’s who of the fashion world, like Dua Lipa and Alexa Chung, have given the trend their stamp of approval. In general, Prada has continued to dominate. Founded in 1913 and based out of Milan, it’s one of the most renowned houses in the world. Famed for their craftsmanship and sophistication, Prada purses strike a balance, often playing with inventive, avant-garde shapes, bright colors, and appliqués. Every bag is somewhat of a statement piece, so collectors will find them exciting investments, and those interested in eco-conscious practices will appreciate the brand’s Re-Nylon project, sported by Alix Earle.

Tessa Petak, news editor: “The Prada Arqué leather shoulder bag is one of my favorite designs from the brand because its style and shape are unique and timeless.”

Bottega Veneta is renowned in the industry for its distinctive leatherwork—specifically its signature intrecciato weave that has become a timeless trait easily recognized by everyone. Founded in 1966 in Italy, the brand’s purses typically do not have overt logos but are instead appreciated for the handcrafted leather. They have a cult following of sorts, especially given the brand’s surge in popularity during Daniel Lee’s reign as creative director from 2018–2021. Now, with Matthieu Blazy at the helm, the brand continues to attract fashion minimalists around the world who are usually in tune with resale value in the accessories category. Popular shapes include the Pouch, worn often by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley; the Cassette with its larger weave; the Jodie, which is available in three sizes; and the Knot Clutch, perfect for evening events.

Gucci bags are best for those who appreciate luxury brands’ value and like to show off their accessory collection. They have many recognizable details, from the signature horsebit hardware to the iconic green- and red-striped straps. Gucci has introduced and reinvented bag shapes throughout the years that continue to hold their value in the marketplace. The Jackie bag, in particular, is a popular silhouette that you can source secondhand on many resale sites. The brand has practical options aplenty—take the iconic Ophidia tote that Rihanna frequently sports. Whether you’re drawn to Gucci bags for the logo or the quality, they’re a worthy investment.

Jordan Julian, editor: “I am lucky enough to have accumulated a lovely little collection of Gucci bags, both newer styles and vintage. Gucci combines the highest caliber of quality with timeless elegance and often whimsical details. Though they come with the steep designer price tag, they’re made to last a lifetime and never go out of style—as evidenced by the fact that most of my Gucci bags first belonged to my mother 30 years ago.”

Founded by Danielle Corona in 2006, Hunting Season is a New York-based brand known for its modern, structural bags that are chic, recognized for their boxy shapes, and versatile. These bags incorporate clean lines and high-quality, sustainable materials. The label combines traditional artisanal techniques with function to make the purses stand out and instantly recognizable for those in the know. The bags are best for those who value high-quality luxury items but want to keep sustainability and ethical practices in mind.

Cuyana is understated and chic with a focus on sustainability and high-quality items that don’t go out of style. In other words, there’s no better brand to shop for a backpack. Cuyana employs circularity initiatives, encouraging shoppers to extend the wear of their products and give them a second life. Not only are the designs crafted wholly from sustainably certified materials, the silhouettes are timeless. You won’t be disappointed by the spacious compartments and adjustable straps. Cuyana comes recommended by Shapoff for backpacks in particular. “Cuyana has a very clean and chic design backpack that is more affordable but still good quality and looks high-end,” she says. It isn’t for the logo-lover, but instead for the chic minimalist.

When we asked InStyle editors to share their favorite purse brands, Mansur Gavriel was a no-brainer. The brand has been making a name for itself amongst mid-market handbags since 2013. Founded by Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel, Mansur Gavriel was born after the design duo realized how hard it can be to find affordable bags with contemporary designs. Each bag reflects their approach to luxury: timeless, durable, and stylish purses for less. Their original line of tote and bucket bags now extends to masterfully designed clutches, crossbodies, and shoulder bags. Our editors rave about the it bags’ color range and quality, and celebrities like Katie Holmes and Gigi Hadid concur.

Danielle McNally, executive editor: “The leather is sturdy, the stitching never frays, it holds a ton, and it can be styled for many occasions. You’d be hard-pressed to find many other bags for less than $700 that can say the same.”

Frances Solá-Santiago, fashion editor: “The brand does a great job at turning out really classic styles that still speak to today’s trends. The fact that they offer them in so many sizes and colors makes Mansur Gavriel a must for me.”

Claudia Willen, associate editor: “I have a Mansur Gavriel tote bag and clutch, and both are two of the most-used bags in my ever-expanding rotation. They look like they cost much more than they do and hold up astoundingly well over time.”

Founded by Mireia Llusia-Lindh, DeMellier is a London-based brand that values sophistication, elegance, and quality. Perhaps most importantly, the brand is committed to ethical practices. The bags are sustainably sourced and crafted from leather that’s a byproduct of the food industry. DeMellier is also philanthropic with “A Bag, A Life,” which is an initiative that funds a life-saving vaccine for a child in need with every bag sold. Whether you choose a wicker style for summer, sleek leather, or a canvas shopper for chic city days, you’ll have plenty of room for your essentials. DeMellier also offers smaller purses appropriate for events. All in all, these bags are best for the sophisticated woman who appreciates an elegant touch of gold hardware and modern shapes.

As soon as you set your eyes on a Poléne bag, you’ll understand why it’s beloved by InStyle editors and French fashion aficionados. The Parisian brand throws trends out the window, instead focusing on functionality, signature details, and sculptural silhouettes. It makes each bag with Spanish-crafted leather and subtle yet significant details, like golden clasps and adjustable straps, so women on the go can adjust them to fit any occasion. Every collection pushes the envelope while still prioritizing the brand’s minimalistic ethos, draping and weaving genuine leather in ways you might not have thought possible. Thanks to their sensible and sexy design, Polène bags are a staple in a few of our editors’ closets.

Zarah Kavarana, associate editorial director: “Though fundamentally minimalist in structure, unique accents like fanned-out edges and bulbous curves make even the most understated styles eye-catching. From a functionality perspective, the brand thinks of every detail.”

Irene Richardson, writer: “The Numéro Dix is my most complimented and versatile purse. It’s surprisingly roomy despite its slim shape. I’m really not a fan of logoed purses, and I appreciate how you can tell this is a luxury purse without slapping a giant label on it. The quality speaks for itself.”

Judith Leiber’s wide array of specialty clutches has seen years of iconic collaborations with the likes of Lanvin, the Kardashians, Iris Apfel, and artists such as Ashley Longshore. The sparkling bags, many of which are shaped like objects (see: the Judith Leiber Eggplant and Judith Leiber Cat Emily), are perhaps most recognizable and generally spotted on the red carpet to play to a theme, movie premiere, or trend. The bags double as works of art and are all conversation starters. While the most intricate sell for upwards of $5,000, some of the more simplistic, everyday styles are under $1,000 and would complement anyone’s wardrobe. Either way, these bags are made to evoke serious glamor. These bags are perfect for those who like to infuse their looks with personality or may be searching for a specific minaudière that caters to an on-theme outfit.

If you like the look of handwoven leather, you’ll undoubtedly appreciate the craftsmanship of Dragon Diffusion bags. The brand was founded by Craig Wright and involves a special technique that utilizes natural vegetable dyes during the handcrafted process, giving these leather bags a unique patina that gets better with age. While these bags stand out for their beauty, they are minimalist in the sense that they don’t feature many embellishments or hardware adornments.

Aside from Loewe’s undeniable craftsmanship, the purses, in particular, are constructed in unique geometric shapes, from its iconic Puzzle pouch to the Paseo, which fans out like a croissant. Carrying a Loewe bag is sort of like wearing a work of art, and there’s a page devoted to each of the label’s inimitable shapes on the site. Torres and Tunnell both name Loewe a favorite luxury purse brand for 2024. Even the miniature versions of a Loewe bag will set you back over $2,000, so these bags are best for those who enjoy investing in luxury fashion and value artisanship. The wearer should appreciate structure in their wardrobe, and should not be afraid of volume or adding dimension to an outfit.

The Isabel Marant shopper has a bohemian, laid-back, rock ‘n’ roll aesthetic about her wardrobe, and the bags are perfectly complementary to it. Founded by Isabel Marant in 1994, the French fashion house has become renowned for its Parisian chic style that’s played up with a certain toughness. The Oskan Hobo Bag epitomizes the label’s traits, with its slouchy shape, whipstitched trim, and general ease. You can easily pack all your belongings for a day or night and work with many outfits. In a nutshell, these bags are best for the free-spirited, bohemian-loving woman who values luxury craftsmanship and purse details such as fringe, suede, tassels, raffia, and studs.

What to Keep in Mind

  • Practicality: A bag’s functionality is one of the most important factors to consider before purchasing it. Can you fit all of your essentials inside? Is there enough space for a cardholder, phone, and headphones? Will it feel comfortable no matter how you wear it? Torres recommends watching videos of others styling the purse and storing their items inside to determine how well it will fit into your lifestyle. “Tiny bags are cute but not practical,” Tunnell says. “Personally, I look for styles that I don’t need to be precious with because lived-in purses work better for my life.” Shapoff shares an anecdote on this topic: “I just went to Paris and had the intention of buying myself a new luxury summer bag. In the end, I went with the bag I thought I would use the most and had the strongest connection to. You want to love the bag you purchase, or you’ll never use it,” she says. “Spending a ton of money on a bag will not guarantee you’ll use it. I want to know that the bag I’m buying is versatile and easy to wear with many looks—unless I specifically want a statement piece.”
  • Material: Carefully read the specs of the bag you’re considering so you know where the fabric comes from. Maybe you prefer leather—whether it’s pebbled, quilted, woven, or smooth—or perhaps vegan, cruelty-free options are more up your alley. Torres notes that she’s not very good at caring for her purses, so she searches for leather that doesn’t scratch easily, whereas Tunnell likes to examine the seams on the bag’s corners to make sure the material appears sturdy. Shapoff adds that most luxury brands do a great job of refurbishing bags when the exterior needs a touch-up. “I’ve sent numerous bags out to be cleaned or fixed because so many offer a lifetime guarantee or the option to touch up, which makes splurging on them worth it,” she says.
  • Interior: When evaluating a bag’s interior, you should check the lining, pockets, and zipper compartments for accessibility and convenience. “Nothing is worse than when your lip gloss or pen leaks all over your pristine white lining, right?” Tunnell says. “I try to avoid that from the jump by looking for practical solutions since all my purses end up being workhorses.” If you like to store your essentials in compartments, choose a bag with separate sections to keep your items accessible and organized when you’re on the go.

Your Questions, Answered

What purse brands are in style for 2025?

InStyle editors have already established that fashion maximalism is in, but when it comes to handbag trends, functionality is still key. Practical silhouettes with eye-catching accents will be all the rage in 2025. As for which finishes and styles to look out for from brands in 2025, our fashion experts say oversized medicine bags, fringe-adorned purses, sleek and structured work bags, floral accents, and east-west bags are the ones to look out for. Brands like Bottega Veneta, Fendi, Jil Sander, and Prada each sent variations of these styles down the runway, so shoppers have lots to choose from when deciding which bag to invest in this year.

What purse brands hold their value?

Luxury brands with iconic shapes in their arsenal will always hold their value (think: The Hermès Birkin or Kelly, Gucci Jackie, Louis Vuitton Speedy, and Chanel 2.55 or Boy bag, for instance).

Tunnell notes that The Row is also rising in this category, with the label offering more modern heirlooms. “If we are speaking super high-end, then Hermès is your go-to,” Shapoff says. “It will increase in value and is a serious investment piece. All of the long-withstanding luxury brands have staple bags that have been in their programs for many years and continue to prove their value and longevity.”
