Senior dog’s reaction to owner’s crying baby melts hearts: “Always a momma”

A dog’s response to a crying baby left viewers in a puddle of happy tears as she proved her motherly instincts are still strong in her senior years.

Mother Lexi Swan needed a quick bathroom break while her newborn napped in the rocker. But, of course, her baby started crying as soon as she took a second for herself. When Swan returned to the room, she discovered her 14-year-old Chihuahua had tried to take the motherhood pressure off her by consoling the baby.

Swan told Newsweek via TikTok that she had never seen her dog comfort her children in this manner before, which is why she quickly grabbed her phone to record the precious moment. She posted the video to her TikTok account, @tacosallday, on April 7, and as of Tuesday, the clip had amassed more than 872,900 views.

Swan found her dog on the rocker with the baby, attempting to soothe and comfort him the only way she knew how: licking. She licked the baby’s cheek and ears. Her dog had multiple litters before and knew licking helped. The thought process was there, but unfortunately, the baby’s cries only continued.

Swan told her dog to back up before picking her up and moving her next to the rocker. She appreciated the dog’s effort to help. Although her method didn’t help, Swan said her dog is always ready to step in as mom with her other children.

“They cry and she goes running!” she said. “She snuggles up with my daughter every night.”

Part of the text on the video reads: “A momma is always a momma.”

What also surprised Swan was how her dog produced milk after Swan gave birth, which she said happened with her first baby as well.

“She had no puppies, of course, just maternal instinct,” she said.

Female dogs will produce milk after having puppies, but an article from Wag Walking reported that this can also happen while they are not pregnant or recently given birth. A few explanations for this could be due to a false pregnancy, hypothyroidism, mammary gland tumor or location post-whelping.

People flooded the TikTok video with their praises for the dog’s effort to help.

“Awww, that poor dog was stressing what she knows to work just wasn’t doing the trick,” commented one viewer.

Another added: “Awe the puppy taking care of the baby!!! That’s precious.”

A third person said: “Dog: I’m licking him and nothing is working!!”
