A dog’s reaction to being reunited with his owner after one night apart further fuels the idea that he’s a “Velcro dog.”
The term “Velcro dog” refers to clingy canines. These dogs follow their owners around constantly, love to be snuggled and receive attention. However, sometimes this behavior can lead to separation anxiety.
Rachel Roberts always knew her 3-year-old Pomeranian, Denver, loved being by her side. His obsession with being with her led Denver to being previously “excused from doggy daycare in Atlanta for being so miserable around other dogs,” she told Newsweek via TikTok.
She hasn’t had to leave her pup alone since their move to Los Angeles. Roberts noted the city is extremely dog-friendly and she brings Denver everywhere. But when she went out of town for a night, she turned to a dog sitter to watch him, and when she picked him up the next day, she was reminded about his clinginess.
“When I got back to pick him up on Sunday, he absolutely EXPLODED with joy,” she said. “He’s known for walking on his back legs like a person for extended amounts of time, and he’ll even do little bunny hops on them when he’s excited, and that’s what he was doing. It was precious.”
Roberts posted in an April 13 TikTok video to her account, @rachlroberts, Denver’s reaction to being together again. Being in the car together on the way home wasn’t enough for Denver. He needed to be touching her the entire time. She could only drive with one hand as his head rested on her arm.
“Eventually, he fell asleep with his little head on me, and ever since then, that’s the only way we ride in the car together,” she said.

Although Roberts looked upset in the video, she was rather touched by Denver’s affection. She wrote in the video’s caption: “How do I explain this feeling to someone who doesn’t have a dog?”
As of Monday afternoon, the clip amassed over 130,500 views and 11,600 likes, with TikTok users crying over how highly dogs think of their owners. People flooded the comments section with similar stories about their dogs who cannot stand being apart.
One TikTok user wrote: “This is why I never travel.”
Another commented: “She thought it was forever, poor baby.”
And a third echoed: “They are just like kids, and he was probably so confused not knowing where you were, or why he was there.”
