The burden of tariffs imposed by the United States has impacted the prices of luxury bags. French luxury giant Hermès will increase its prices in May to offset the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs. According to Reuters, Hermès’ Finance Chief, Eric du Halgouet, said, “We are going to fully offset the impact of these new duties by increasing our selling prices in the United States from May 1, across all our business lines.”
According to Business of Fashion, “Louis Vuitton has increased the price of one of its most popular handbags in the US after the implementation of 10 percent tariffs on goods coming from the European Union.”
The Neverfull GM bag, one of Louis Vuitton’s best-selling designs, now costs $2,200 on the company’s US website—$100 more than last week—a 4.8 percent price hike.

Will these prices affect the customer base of these brands? Probably not. Data Bridge, a global market research firm, predicts that the luxury handbag market will soar to a value of $42 billion by 2029.

While price hikes may be attributed to political shifts, the fascination with ultra-luxury remains undeterred. So, with luxury bag prices on the rise, it’s the perfect time to take a look at some of the priciest arm candies the world has ever seen.

Debbie Wingham’s Upcycled Easter Egg Purse

Artist Debbie Wingham, in 2019, revealed what came to be known as the most expensive bag in the world. Encrusted with 8,000 diamonds, the upcycled purse features an interior lined with an Hermès scarf. It fastens using a pair of Cartier earrings, valued at $40,000. The bag was made with pre-loved materials. According to Dubai Sotheby’s International Realty, “the highlight of this bag is its core—a genuine Emu egg fortified with enamel infused with blue diamond dust.”

The bag was valued at $6.7 million.

Valued at US $3.8 million, the Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse was named the most expensive handbag in the world by Guinness World Records in 2010. According to Mouawad, “The heart-shaped purse, handcrafted from 18-karat gold, incorporates 4,517 diamonds (105 yellow, 56 pink, and 4,356 colourless diamonds) with a total weight of 381.92 carats.”

It’s tiny but mighty. The bejewelled bag was crafted by Pierre Hardy, a celebrated French jeweller and designer, and showcased in 2012. This dazzling miniature bag was intended to be worn as a bracelet, and is embellished with an ensemble of 2,712 diamonds, weighing 89 carats. This piece is part of the Haute Bijouterie Collection from Hermès, and only three bags exist. Its rarity makes it priceless, though it was valued at $2 million.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse.
