ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – A Missouri Conservation Agent was attacked by dogs and injured on Thursday during an arrest in the community of Iron Mountain Lake in St. Francois County.
The St. Francois County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that the agent, who was not named, sustained multiple lacerations and puncture wounds from dog bites in the incident. Paramedics treated him at the scene and he was taken to the hospital.
According to the news release, the agent contacted 66-year-old Janet Shy and her daughter Megan Stroup, 36, both of Belleville, Missouri, about an “equipment violation” when he discovered Stroup had pending warrants.
Shy pulled the agent away when he tried to arrest Stroup and Stroup fled on foot, according to the sheriff’s office. During the struggle with Shy, several dogs belonging to a neighbor attacked the agent.
Shy was also bitten and later treated for injuries, according to the release.
The dogs’ owner, Susan Adams, 60, worked to get the dogs off the agent and Shy. She was also arrested for pending warrants, which were not listed in the news release.
As the dog attack was happening, Stroup fled the scene, according to the release. Multiple surrounding law enforcement agencies were called to the location to assist.
A sheriff’s department K-9 unit found Stroup hiding in some weeds nearby, and when she resisted arrest,t it “prompted a defensive response” from the dog, the sheriff’s office said.
Stroup was treated for minor injuries and examined at the hospital before being taken to jail.
Stroup was later arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault on law enforcement, assault on a police dog and resisting arrest.
Shy was also arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault on law enforcement and resisting arrest and booked at the jail, as was Adams on the aforementioned warrants.
Bond and court information was not available at publication time.
An initial court appearance has not been set for any of the suspects.
Iron Mountain Lake is a community in the southwest corner of St. Francois County. The population was 737 people, according to the 2010 census.
