DENISON, Texas (KXII) – An issue across Texoma that’s becoming way too common – animal abandonment.
In this case, it just so happened to be caught on video.
Surveillance footage shows a woman dropping four dogs over a fence right in front of Denison Animal Welfare Group’s dog adoption center, all while DAWG’s president Stephanie Phillips, and many others, were working inside.
“For whatever reason didn’t come inside and ask for help,” Phillips said. “They just left them in the play yard. One of them got out immediately, and it’s a very busy road that we’re on. It immediately exposed them to a lot of danger.”
Right above DAWG’s Ring doorbell that caught the abandonment on video is a warning sign, telling the culprit that abandoning animals is a crime.
“With the city ordinance violation, which is what we would handle this under, because they were placed in a fenced area here where there were actually people here, that’s just a fine,” said Sergeant Jeremy Monroe of the Denison Police Department.
Sgt. Monroe says in other circumstances, though, such as abandonment on the side of the road, the stakes are even higher.
“It’s a Class A misdemeanor. It’s got some jail time, some hefty fine amounts, and that could be one per animal,” said Sgt. Monroe.
Phillips says DAWG’s goal isn’t to expose the culprits, but instead, spread awareness on the fact that there are places to help.
“This time we caught the event on video,” Phillips said. “But so many times we don’t catch it. We hope that when we catch these events on video that it really helps people understand what happens to an animal when you abandon it like that.”
