ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A St. Johns County family is heartbroken after their puppy was fatally mauled by two loose dogs that got into its home on April 16.
Ring camera footage showed the moments leading up to the death of Megan Caico’s 6-month-old microbully named Frank.
Two loose German Shepherds can be seen walking through her backyard into her house at 9:35 a.m. that day.
Caico got home at 11:03 a.m. when she found those dogs in her living room and Frank in the hallway.
“From what I can [gather] from the audio, he was probably sleeping, was startled, ran back to his safe space, which is his crate, and he was murdered in my back bedroom, master bathroom,” Caico said. “I didn’t like I didn’t want to believe it.”
She was standing at her front door on the phone with police, and the dogs came back.
“I went back to Frank, and I thought, maybe I could do something, and he still had the smile on his face, because he always had a smile on his face, and I just thought, I could do something, and I couldn’t do anything,” Caico said.
Eventually, St. Johns County Sheriff’s deputies, along with St. Johns County Animal Control, arrived and took the dogs away from the area.
She said the owner of the dogs messaged her on Facebook.
“I can’t, I’m not in the place to completely read the message,” Caico said.
As Caico processes the loss of Frank, she feels like she’s still trapped in a nightmare. She said she wants to see a change.
Frank was six months old and he spent two months with the Caico family. They feel his life was cut too short.
News4JAX asked St. Johns County Animal Control who’s handling the investigation to find out what will happen to the German Shepherds.
