MANSFIELD, Ohio (WOIO) – The Richland County Dog Warden said the shelter is full with 119 dogs, and 76 of those were taken in this April alone.
“We have no space, and the dogs are still coming in,” RCDW stated. “This is not sustainable.”
RCDW said the shelter is required by law to take in stray dogs found in Richland County.
With more than six dozen intakes in just three weeks, RCDW stated the shelter can not take any owner surrenders since they are already housing so many.

When the shelter was “completely overwhelmed” with intakes last September, Richland County Dog Warden Missy Houghton said they were “going to have to start using wire kennels to house our dogs. Again.”
Some of the dogs are not at the shelter at 810 North Home Rd. in Mansfield.
A few of the precious pups who have waited the longest in the shelter were moved to the Mansfield Correctional Institution (ManCI) for the ManCI Prison Program training.
RCDW’s adoption fees are:
- $50 for dogs who have been in the shelter for over one year
- $175 for all other dogs
The RCDW adoption fee includes:
- spay/neuter
- first round of vaccinations
- deworming
- microchip
- current year dog license
If you are interested in giving these dogs the gift of a “fur-ever” home, call the Richland County Dog Warden at 419-774-5892 or email dogs@richlandcountyoh.gov with questions.
