MOUNT VERNON– Did you know George Washington loved dogs? Consider taking your dog with you to one of the five special dog tours remaining in 2025 at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate.
It’s a 1.25 mile walking tour exploring canine life at Mount Vernon, from the first president’s dogs to the dogs that live at the estate today.
The tour stops at five historic locations, including Mount Vernon’s west gate, which was the primary entrance to Mount Vernon in Washington’s time and is not accessible to the general public.
Along the way learn about George Washington’s love for dogs, his dogs’ unusual names, and his efforts to improve the quality of his hunting dogs through breeding.

The cost is $10 in addition to general admission.
All guests are required to purchase a grounds pass ($26 for adults/$13 for kids 6-11. free for children 0-5) for entry to the estate. Guests 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
The grounds pass includes an audio tour and self-paced access to the historic area, outbuildings, gardens, tomb, farm, trails, and the museum. On Saturdays and Sundays from April through October, the grounds pass also provides access to our Distillery & Gristmill.
Because George Washington loved dogs, you are always allowed to visit the estate with your dog. Always bring dogs on leashes during daytime public visitation hours. Pet owners must stay with their leashed pets at all times. Unless otherwise noted, dogs are not permitted during evening events. Leashed dogs are permitted on the property with the exception of the following areas: the Mansion and all other historic buildings, the Ford Orientation Center, and Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center, the Shops of Mount Vernon, the Food Court Pavilion, the Mount Vernon Inn, and the Distillery & Gristmill. (Please note: Service animals are exempt from these restrictions.)
