Girl, 4, Killed in ‘Dog Attack’ After 53-Year-Old Woman in the Same Home ‘Suffered a Medical Emergency,’ Police Say

A 4-year-old girl is dead following a “dog attack” that took place after a 53-year-old woman in the same home “suffered a medical emergency,” authorities said.

The Huntingburg Police Department in Indiana responded to a residence on Monday, April 14, when they found the pair “unresponsive” and performed “life-saving measures” on them.

The child, identified by police as Evelynn Lopez, was “immediately transported” to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The older woman, who police identified as Oliva Mora Regalado, was pronounced dead at the home, according to authorities, who did not reveal how the pair were related.

Following an investigation, and by looking at completed autopsy reports on the bodies, police determined that Regalado “suffered a medical emergency that occurred from a preexisting medical condition” while inside the house.

“After this occurred, and for unknown reasons, police believe that dog(s) inside the residence then attacked Evelynn, who was the only other person inside the residence,” authorities added in their social media statement.

Police stated that their investigation determined there were six Pitbulls and one poodle mix inside the home when the incident occurred.

The animals were “sedated and then euthanized on scene” for the “safety of everyone involved and the preservation of evidence,” authorities said.

No criminal charges are expected to be filed in the case, per police.

In an obituary published in The Dubois County Herald, Evelynn was remembered as a “walking ray of sunshine” who had “big sparkling eyes” and a “contagious laugh.”

According to the obituary, she enjoyed outdoor activities and participated in “t-ball, soccer, gymnastics and dance,” and loved cooking alongside her mother.

“She has left such an impact in the lives she’s touched with her immense joyful personality,” her family continued, adding: “In lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that you take a moment to hug your child, grandchild, friend, or walk in the woods for a moment, an hour, or a day. Time waits for no one.”

A separate obituary for Regalado described her as a “sweet, kind and gentle” person who “devoted her life to care for those she loved most, her family.”

She was also remembered by her family as someone who loved “experimenting on a new recipe” in the kitchen and “enjoyed going for walks and dancing.”
