If you’ve been considering adopting a dog, now is a good time to take home a new furry friend.
Next week, 10 shelters across Massachusetts will be waiving their adoption fees for all dogs over a year old, the MSPCA announced Friday. The adopt-a-thon will begin Monday, April 21 and last through Sunday, April 27.

All four MSPCA-Angell Adoption Centers — in Boston, Methuen, Salem and on Cape Cod — will be participating in the event, the MSPCA said.
Additionally, Lowell Humane Society, Berkshire Humane Society in Pittsfield, Worcester Animal Rescue League, Boston Animal Control and the Thomas J. O’Connor Adoption Center in Springfield will be waiving adoption fees for the adopt-a-thon.
Dakin Humane Society will also participate in the event on April 25 and 26 only.

“We’ve been saying for a long time that adoptions of larger dogs have slowed down over the past couple of years, and it’s causing a capacity problem for us and many other shelters,” MSPCA-Angell Project Manager Jamie Garabedian said in a press release.
Massachusetts shelters are now also taking in more local surrendered, stray and seized dogs, the MSPCA said. Local dog intake at the MSPCA has increased 11% in the first few months of 2025 compared to the beginning of 2024.

Collectively, the 10 shelters are aiming to find homes for 100 dogs during the adopt-a-thon.
“We want to continue to be there for all the animals who need to come into our care for various reasons, but if we aren’t able to free up space, that might not be possible,” Garabedian said.
