There was high drama when a dog in Wisconsin spotted a nearby squirrel and gave chase.
Normally there would be nothing out of the ordinary about a dog chasing a rodent. It’s a habit that is hardwired into many canines and what certified dog trainer and animal behavior expert Stephanie Gibeault describes as their “wolf heritage.”
“Over 14,000 years ago, there were no dogs. But there were wolves that lived near human settlements,” Gibeault told the American Kennel Club. “These friendly wolves eventually evolved into early dogs.”
She said: “Dogs share the hardwired predatory behavior sequence of wolves. The full sequence includes spotting the prey, then stalking, chasing, attacking, and finally, consuming. Not all breeds show the entire sequence.”
This was a little different though.
Abby from Weyauwega bore witness to those predatory instincts when her dog caught sight of a squirrel in her garden. It was a moment captured on a nearby Ring security camera with the footage subsequently shared with Newsweek.
That’s largely down to the circumstances surrounding the incident. Because this was no ordinary case of a dog chasing a sequel—this dog was tied to an outdoor grill at the time.
Abby told Ring: “My dog saw a squirrel that she wanted to chase, and she took off running with the grill wrapped in her running lead.”
The video captures the trail of destruction left in the dog’s wake as he gives chase. That’s hilarious enough but the fact Abby’s response to the ensuing chaos is captured on camera adds to the comedy of it all.
“I was shocked and stunned, and you can clearly see my reaction in the video,” she said.
Thankfully Abby was able to see the comedy in what unfolded. “I thought it was funny because it was such a one-off situation that has never happened before,” she said.
Even so, she might think twice about tying his leash to the grill again.

This isn’t the first time a dog’s trail of destruction has been caught on camera for the benefit of the internet. Back in September a goldendoodle called Remy had the internet in stitches after trashing his owner’s living room.
It wasn’t the damage done that went viral on social media though, but rather Remy’s reaction to being told off, that had people entertained.
Another viral moment from February featured a mischievous dog who, after being caught “red-pawed” chewing up his owner’s sandal, pretended he was sleeping in an effort to avoid being told off.
Arguably the most dramatic example of dog-led destruction, however, came courtesy of a dog named Zoey who somehow destroyed over $2,000 in cash. It’s fair to say she was in the doghouse after that.
