After a fatal dog attack in Tucson that took the life of 43-year-old Kevin Renguul, the Pima Animal Care Center has impounded the dogs involved, the shelter confirmed.
The owner of the dogs, 60-year-old Martin Martinez, was booked on second degree murder charges after five of his dogs escaped his property and attacked Renguul on March 30.
Deputies found Renguul lying in the road with severe injuries all over his body. Life-saving measures were administered until medical personnel arrived and took Renguul to the hospital in critical condition, the Sheriff’s Department said.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Renguul died from his injuries April 2 at the hospital.
Pima County Sheriff’s Office officials stated that the dogs had a history of aggression and had previously attacked a different neighbor.
Martinez was arrested and charged with felony endangerment and felony assault by a vicious animal. Following Renguul’s death, an additional charge of manslaughter was filed.
The PACC said they have been holding the dogs under bond since the incident, but the owner of the dogs, Martinez, has until the end of the business day April 17 to pay the bond.
If the bond does get paid, Martinez has the right to go before a hearing officer and make a pitch to have the dogs returned to him.
“Under the circumstances, I’d say it’s highly likely that if they become our property, they will be put down,” said director Steve Kozachik with the PACC.
As of April 17, Martinez was still listed as an inmate at the Pima County Jail.
