After her dog’s initial reaction to getting a new puppy, a woman from Destin, Florida, worried that her two pets would never become friends. That was only until she caught something special happening on camera.
The clip, shared on the pets’ social media account, @tankandolaf, shows the little puppy, Tank, lying belly up on the floor, asking his big brother, Olaf, to poke his belly.
Surprisingly, Olaf pats his brother on the belly with his paw, reciprocating his love for the very first time since his arrival.
“We were starting to worry these two would never be friends. And then this happened”, she writes in the viral TikTok video shared on Tuesday. “Can’t believe I caught this on camera”, the caption says.
The poster, Claire Samford, told Newsweek that about four weeks ago she adopted the mini dachshund because she thought that her five-year-old Great Pyrenees mix was bored and needed a friend.
However, since little Tank, who only weighs about 3.5 lbs, got home, his 100 lbs brother has been nothing but scared of him.
“[He] would just ignore Tank’s attempts to play. Until yesterday, when Tank flipped over on his belly and I witnessed them play for the first time. It was such a special moment watching them bond, and I hope their friendship will only continue to grow!” she said.
Some users in the comments described Olaf’s interaction with his little brother as giving him the “pyr paw,” but what exactly is it?
The pyr paw, according to the Appalachian Great Pyrenees Rescue, is a classic character trait of this breed, that they usually show when asking for attention, and is often considered a sweet and funny way to engage with you.
While it may take some time for them to form a bond, bringing a new puppy home to your existing dog can be a very exciting experience for both, as long as you introduce them the right way.
According to British animal charity Blue Cross, their first meeting should be outside in the garden or on a short walk near home, to avoid triggering territorial instincts in your older dog.
Allow them to sniff each other while taking small breaks from the walk, and then bring them home together, leaving house lines on both of them, to be able to easily separate them at any point.
Make sure they each have a space where they can feel safe and where they can go isolate when needed. Supervise their interactions until they are visibly comfortable together.
