Every spring, I fight the same two battles in my home: ants and whatever my dog Roscoe tracks into the house (especially on rainy days when our yard gets muddy). Wiping off my dog’s paws with a damp washcloth never got his paws clean enough, and neither did the absorbent door mat we bought for our back door.
I needed something that could really get the dirt from between his toes, and that’s when I found this $22 MudBuster paw cleaner. I’ve had it for five years, and I still use it nearly every day.
How to Use It
The MudBuster comes in three sizes, so get the one that allows you to put your pup’s paw inside without it touching the bottom of the cup. I recommend sizing up if you aren’t sure. The brand recommends using just water, but I also add a few drops of gentle pet shampoo if Roscoe is especially muddy. I typically fill the cup up halfway.
Next, put your dog’s paw into the cup and twist the cup side to side around their paw. You can move the cup up and down, but I’ve found that twisting is gentler. When you’re done, dry each paw off and rinse out the MudBuster.
Why I Love It
It’s Gentle on Paws
The silicone bristles on the scrubber are soft and extra-flexible, making it gentle on my dog’s paws. Roscoe is not a fan of people touching his paws at all. At first, I had to distract him with treats—and getting him to let us clean his paws was often a two-person job. These days, however, he’s figured out that the MudBuster won’t hurt him and patiently lets me use it. (I still give him treats for being a good boy, though.)
I’ve even used it for first aid. When Roscoe tore a nail, I used the cup without the silicone scrubber to quickly rinse his paw–so much easier than trying to get him into the bathtub, or dabbing at it with a washcloth.
It’s Easy to Clean
The MudBuster comes in three pieces. The top unscrews from the cup and the silicone scrubber is removable and can lay flat. I usually just give them all a quick rinse with hot water and let them air dry. If the pieces get extra muddy, I’ll scrub them with soap—but a quick rinse usually suffices. Reviewers on Amazon say that they’ve put theirs in the dishwasher. The brand doesn’t comment on this one way or the other, and I personally have never tried it because it’s just so easy to give it a rinse.
Is the MudBuster Paw Cleaner Worth It?
Yes! In fact, I’m just going to say it: It’s pawsome. Of all the fancy things that we’ve bought for Roscoe, this super-practical paw cleaner is something I use a lot—practically every day—especially in the spring and summer. The whole process usually takes me less than five minutes and it keeps so much dirt (and who knows what else!) off of my floors and furniture. It’s also nice to take to the dog park to give his paws a quick rinse before getting in the car.
It contributes to Roscoe’s good health, too. Cleaning off skin irritants and allergens like grass and pollen keeps him more comfortable, prevents excessive paw-licking, and helps with that Fritos smell…a definite bonus!
