PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — People in a Southeast Portland neighborhood are demanding justice after an animal allegedly attacked two dogs, killing one of them.
“It’s really scary to have a possible threat that could just run out and attack at any time and the city is unwilling to get involved and do anything about it,” said Michael Theofelis, a Woodstock resident who, like his neighbors, are afraid to walk outside after multiple incidents involving an aggressive dog.
“I saw that there was a Rottweiler and it had a Golden Doodle pinned to the ground, and it was chewing on its arm,” he said. Theofelis explained how he got this cast around his wrist. “We were doing anything to try and make it let go.”
Theofelis said he broke his hand as he tried to pull the aggressive Rottweiler during an apparent attack, Saturday.
Several people told KATU the dog that was attacked had to have one leg amputated.
Many said they are frustrated because another dog was killed after being mauled by the same Rottweiler the week before.
Several neighbors told KATU’s Victor Park that animal control told the owner the dog must have a muzzle and to put signs warning neighbors about the dog.
“I’d like to see the owner held accountable,” Theofelis added.
KATU knocked on the door of the home where the Rottweilers live. The owner of the dog wasn’t home, but a man named Chris who owns the home, answered.
“All lot of neighbors are concerned about why aren’t the dogs wearing muzzles that they’re supposed to be wearing,” Park told Chris through a shut door. “We were just told today,” Chris replied.
“What are you going to do to make sure these dogs don’t go out there and attack other dogs?” Park questioned and Chris replied, “We have instructions from animal control and we are following.”
Park asked if he would be okay if animal control removed the dogs, but Chris refused to answer any more questions.
Multnomah County Animal Control deferred any questions to the communications team when KATU called them.
In the meantime, people in the area are left with many questions.
“I don’t necessarily want to see this dog put down. But I don’t think this dog should be in the neighborhood with an owner who’s not going to make sure they’re not properly kept safe,” Theofelis added.
You may remember a similar incident occurred a year ago when Multnomah County confiscated a dog, only to release afterwards.
That resulted in woman being seriously hurt in an attack. You can read that story by clicking here.
