Midland animal advocates work to rehome more than 70 dogs saved in hoarding case

ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) – In animal hoarding cases, once the Midland County Sheriff’s Office’s job is done, the job for animal advocacy groups has just begun. In the case now being dubbed “the chihuahua house,’ the road ahead is particularly long.

“When you’re out at a hoarding situation, you’re just grabbing dogs.”

78 dogs, rescued from a Midland County home last week.

“Who can take one dog? Who can take two dogs? Three dogs?”

Animal advocacy groups across Midland County wasted no time, each taking on as many of the chihuahuas as they could.

“I believe Lone Star was contacted first by the Midland County Sheriff’s Office regarding the hoarding case. And I mean as soon as that happened, we were contacted, and we decided we need a group message,” Kelsey Hughes, dog coordinator for Midland Animal Shelter Adoptables said. “Right now, we have 14 of the hoarding case dogs.”

Once the dogs are removed from their unsafe home, the next part of their journey begins. The first step is veterinary care. That can be especially costly for dogs who come from a hoarding background.

“Many of the dogs in hoarding cases are inbred. Well, they all are,” Tracye Gearhart, MASA President said. “Sometimes you feel, like, geez. These dogs just don’t get a chance. They don’t get a fair chance.”

After extensive, and often costly veterinary care, the fosters step in, and the dogs are on their way to their fair chance.

“My hope is that they all get a lap to sit in. Because they’re all lap dogs. Every one of them. And that they get that one-on-one attention because hoarding dogs do not get one-on-one attention. And everyone needs one-on-one attention every once in a while.”

MASA, Permian Basin Animal Advocates and Lone Star Animal Sanctuary are all in need of donations and fosters to help these dogs. To help, you can call:

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
