COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 7-month-old girl died after being attacked by a dog inside a south Columbus home on Wednesday, authorities say.
Columbus Police Sgt. James Fuqua said the girl was bitten by a family dog inside a house in the 3700 block of South Champion Avenue.
A spokesperson with the Columbus Division of Police said the infant was taken to a fire station located in the 3000 block of Parsons Avenue. The girl was pronounced dead at Nationwide Children’s Hospital at 11:43 a.m.
Fuqua said this was a situation that escalated very quickly and it appears to be accidental. No charges are expected to be filed. He added that what happened is a terribly sad and tragic situation.
“There is really not a lot of words I can say to convey how I feel and how the officers who arrived. Everyone in this process is literally grieving as if this child belonged to us because most of us are parents and can’t imagine just how this scene is,” Fuqua said.
There were multiple dogs in the house at the time of the attack, according to Fuqua. It’s unclear which dog attacked the girl. Franklin County Animal Control is handling the investigation and the agency will determine what happens to the dogs.
