Michigan dog beach area closed permanently because of E. coli issues

LAKE ORION, MI – A dog-friendly area at an Oakland County park has been permanently closed.

Oakland County Parks said Monday that the dog dock and beach at Orion Oaks County Park is closed due to consistently unsafe E. coli levels in the water.

“This decision was made with the health and safety of our visitors and their pets as our top priority,” a statement said.

Officials said bi-weekly testing of the water near the dog dock in 2024 found high levels of E. coli, exceeding safety thresholds and unsafe for dogs and their owners.

As part of 2026 master planning efforts at Orion Oaks, officials are exploring potential improvements which may include a water feature and other enhancements.

“We appreciate your patience while the plans are being developed,” a statement said.

Guests who use the park are being encouraged to share their thoughts in a survey, which can be found here.

Orion Oaks is known for its 24-acre dog park, which features enclosures for off-leash play, two trails, field area, picnic pavilion and modern restrooms.

The 916-acre park also offers 10 miles of hiking and mountain bike trails, geocaching and fishing on Lake Sixteen, with a wheelchair accessible fishing pier off Joslyn Road. A small boat launch is also provided for non-motorized boats.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
