West Sacramento officer shoots, kills dog after he was bitten, officials say

A West Sacramento officer shot and killed an attacking dog on Tuesday night as he was assisting someone to their home, the police department said. Officials said that around 10:20 p.m., officers responded to Water Street near Riverbank Road for the report of a man lying in the street yelling. West Sacramento police said that after making contact with the man, officers found he was intoxicated and lived with family nearby. They tried to help escort the man home, but when he opened the front gate to the residence, a German Shepherd escaped. Officials said the dog first bit one officer’s pants before biting the officer’s wrist. West Sacramento police said the officer had to shoot the dog in order to stop its attack. The officer was taken to an area hospital where he was treated and released. KCRA was at the scene on Tuesday night, where there was a large police presence following the dog attack and shooting.
