SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. (WBKO) – OnPoint K9 is a training service for police officers partnered with a law enforcement-specific dog.
When having a partner in crime, the dogs must be trained to go out and follow the necessary procedure to identify evidence or catch someone that police may be looking for.
The training service hosts an annual seminar where police officers from around the area come together to practice potential scenarios with their dogs in training.
The Founder of OnPoint K9, Jason Hanley, describes some things the dogs learn in the seminar.
“We have to train for certification standards for these dogs. We have to make sure that the dog can indicate on whatever narcotics that they’re supposed to and then to be able to do building searches and apprehensions if need be,” Hanley said.
The Founder of Unleash’d Canine Academy in Illinois, Mark Boggs, was at the seminar to help assist with training. He believes dogs are important partners for police officers to have with their unique abilities to find things.
“These dogs can do things we can’t do. They can smell things we can’t smell in the woods at night, everything. And they have another purpose, too: they keep officers safe. We do building searches. If you have a suspect hiding, it’s armed and dangerous. We don’t know where he’s at in that building,” Boggs said.
The training gives dogs a variety of instances to ensure they can be prepared no matter what they may face.
A dog’s preparation is essential in keeping themselves and their partnered officer safe.
