A Waukon man has been charged with animal neglect after Allamakee County sheriff’s deputies said they found 10 dogs in his house, two of which were dead.
Nathaniel Coleman, 28, is charged in Allamakee County with animal neglect, inadequate care, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Coleman was being held in the Winneshiek County Jail, where he had an outstanding arrest warrant after failing to report to the jail for a two-day sentence imposed in 2024 when he pleaded guilty to drug charges.
The Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office conducted a welfare check Wednesday on Coleman’s residence, at 530 Hanover Hill Lane, Waukon.
It had received a call from the ex-husband of Coleman’s grandmother, Susan Burrow, who owns the house, according to Allamakee County property records. Coleman lived with Burrow in the house, and Burrow’s ex-husband was concerned about the way she was being treated by Coleman. He asked the sheriff’s office to check on her, according to a search warrant request filed Thursday.
Coleman was arrested when deputies arrived at the house because of the outstanding warrant in Winneshiek County. Deputies then asked Burrow to show them around the house so they could check on her living situation. They found 10 dogs — two of which were dead — in poor living conditions in the house.
A veterinarian assessed the dead dogs and told officers that one had died from injuries sustained when it was attacked by another dog, and the other had died from sepsis as a result of a ruptured uterus. The veterinarian said that Coleman was listed as the breeder on the vet clinic’s records, despite not having a license to be a commercial dog breeder in Iowa, according to the search warrant request.
The eight surviving dogs were seized by the sheriff’s office and transported to the Humane Society in Decorah.
