Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — A Rochester woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to second-degree manslaughter in connection with a dog attack that resulted in the death of her infant son.
Anastasia Weaver, 20, was sentenced to 1-3 years in state prison for the Aug. 3 incident.
Police said Weaver and Hawkins left their 3-month-old son, Sulamain Jr., alone in the attic of a home on Bidwell Terrace with two “pit bull-type” dogs while they went to smoke marijuana. Upon their return, the infant was found unresponsive. The death was ruled a homicide due to injuries from a dog mauling.
The case was initially set to go to trial next week. Weaver’s decision to plead guilty came after the infant’s father, Sulamain Hawkins Sr., 20, pleaded guilty to manslaughter earlier this month and received the same sentence.

Assistant District Attorney Sara Van Strydonck and Weaver’s attorney, Mike Schiano, said they were satisfied with the plea and sentence.
“This would have been a very traumatic case for any jury to hear,” Schiano said. “The pictures were horrific; the allegations here were just terrible. I don’t think anyone would have liked to sit through a trial like this, so it’s better for her — for anybody — to put this behind them at this point.”
“There is no punishment that I think I could impose or the judge could impose that will be anything near what these parents will have to live with for the rest of their lives,” Van Strydonck said. “At the end of the day, they took responsibility for their actions or their inactions and how it led to their child’s death.”
