Ann Arbor police are looking for the person who abandoned a dog in a dumpster Tuesday, officials said.
They said officers were called at about 11 a.m. Tuesday to the 3000 block of Wolverine Drive near Interstate 94 and Platt Road for a report that someone found a dog in a garbage dumpster. The canine did not have a collar and is not microchipped, authorities said.
Police said the dog, a male pit bull mix, was removed with the help of Washtenaw County Animal Control.
They said the Humane Society of Huron Valley examined the dog and found it had a large abscess on the left side of its ribs.
On Tuesday, officials with the Humane Society said in a Facebook page post that the dog “is nervous but very sweet, and we will give him all the care he needs. We’re guessing he’s 10 years old.”
The nonprofit is collecting donations to cover the dog’s medical expenses and raised more than $2,000 on Tuesday.
“Thank you everyone. We will keep you updated on the diagnosis for the mass on his side,” officials said in the post. “Yesterday afternoon, we let this guy decompress and got him out for his first walk in the evening, he didn’t seem to want to go far but enjoyed sniffing around and taking treats. He had a big day! Please know that, regardless of how he ended up in the dumpster, the majority of our community is filled with compassionate people like all of you.”
Anyone with information about the dog or who left it in the dumpster should call the Ann Arbor Police Department at (734) 794-6920.
The case is the latest incident involving a neglected dog in the region.
Last week, three Flint residents were charged after authorities found a young boy and several dead and abused dogs inside a squalid home.
Last month, Genesee County officials said they charged a Vienna Township man for allegedly abandoning two dogs in cages in a garage. Both were emaciated, covered in feces and urine, and had no food or water, according to authorities.
In October, three Eastpointe residents were charged in connection with the deaths of six dogs in their rental home and police said they believe they were running a puppy mill.
