Janice Taylor continues to recover weeks after a vicious dog attack when a pit bull approached her. “I’m not afraid of dogs, but I looked at the dog and it looked like he was growling or something,” Taylor said. However, before she knew it, the unthinkable happened. Taylor ran onto a nearby porch and picked up a shovel to fend off the dog. She said the dog attacked her forehead and bit her hand so she ran and jumped into some bushes to get cover. The dog then bit her leg. “I really thought I was going to die. I would, that’s why I was screaming to holler, ‘Help! Help, somebody help, you know?'” Taylor said.Tony Kriley, a postmaster with USPS, heard Taylor’s cries and ran to action.”I heard someone yelling, help, help. And then, I couldn’t find her. At first, she was, like, behind a shrub,” Kriley said.Kriley sprayed the dog with dog spray to get it off Taylor. He said he then had to wrestle the dog off of Taylor. Jamie Stevens, a mail carrier with USPS, then jumped in as well. He helped fight the dog off until it ran away.”On a normal day, I probably wouldn’t have even been in that place at that time. Like, because I had a route inspection everything was different that day. And we were there at the right place at the right time,” Stevens said. The dog was later captured by animal care and control. As for Taylor, she is now on the road to recovery but can thank her two heroes in person for saving her life. “Just glad the day was there that day care they showed you what kind of mail carriers we have. They care about people. Did they try to come and assist people when they hear what’s going on, what’s happening, instead of just ignoring and walking away,” Taylor said.As for Kriley and Stevens, officials with USPS are expected to honor the two men with the Postmaster General Heroes Program. The program works to commend USPS employees who go beyond the call of duty. Officials with USPS encouraged the community to share similar stories of their employees going above and beyond so no hero goes unnoticed.
