5 days in a hot car: Neglected dogs rescued in Walker County, owner wanted

Friday we are learning more about how 4 emaciated dogs were rescued from a home in Walker County.

3 of those dogs were left in a hot car for 5 days. The fourth tied up to a generator.

Now, there are several warrants out for their owner.

Bailey Clements, Director of Walker County Animal Control, says…

“Being in there for such an extended period of time, with lack of food and water, they were pretty much trying to eat on anything that they can.”

The owner faces four counts of abandonment.

“It is our understanding she’s not currently in Walker County, but we do have warrants issued,” Clements says.

The incident report says that deputies with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office were first on the scene after they received pictures of the emaciated dogs trapped in a car.

“Sections of the car had been chewed through. There was feces throughout the vehicle, as well as urine. Maggots were in a lot of the floorboards. The smell alone, once you opened it, was pretty putrid,” Clements says.

Pictures shared by the sheriff’s office show the dogs inside the car, stuck in an environment the incident report describes as “detrimental to their immediate safety and well-being.”

Clements was one of the first to respond to the scene. She says the dogs showed visible signs of emaciation.

“So much weight has been lost that some muscle mass is starting to go on the spine, ribs, things like that. It’s a very obvious decrease in weight.”

The report says that no dog food was left or provided by the owner. Although, the report says the owner’s grandmother attempted throwing food through a crack in the window.

Investigators found another dog close by, tied to a generator inside of a shed, with little space to move, and no food or water near her.

After their rescue, Clements says authorities took the four dogs to the Walker County Animal Shelter.

Before treatment, the report details a severe flea infestation that covered officers’ arms, legs, and bodies when handling the dogs.

“One of them is already pre-adopted, waiting on its home. The main concern at that point that we’re aware of is obviously the flea infestation on the animals, as well as their weight,” Clements says.

Fortunately, their health is improving.

“They got their vaccines, flea and tick, de-wormer, they were heartworm tested, weighted and everything like that,” Clements says.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
