KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Firefighters never know exactly what they’ll encounter when they respond to an emergency. Friday afternoon they arrived at a house fire and found nearly a dozen animals trapped inside.
Smoke and fire were coming out of the two-story house when firefighters pulled up near Norton Avenue and Smart Avenue shortly before 1 p.m.

Two people inside the house at the time of the fire were able to escape the burning house before firefighters arrived.
Firefighters searched the house and rescued two dogs, five cats, and four kittens. The department said one of the cats may not survive its injuries.
The Red Cross is helping the two residents with housing.

City inspectors will determine if the house is too dangerous and if it needs to be demolished.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
