A Canandaigua man has been charged with animal cruelty after authorities found a dog living in terrible conditions inside an abandoned home on Brickyard Road.
Dennis D. Keyser, 61, was arrested on March 20 following a joint investigation by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and the Ontario County Humane Society. Deputies had responded to the area five days earlier, after receiving reports of a Jack Russell terrier-type dog wandering without supervision.
According to the Humane Society, the dog—identified as a 12-year-old named Louie—was seen trying to re-enter a residence at 2322 Brickyard Road, but the door was closed. Deputies noticed a vehicle in the driveway and, after announcing their presence with no response, entered the home out of concern that someone might be in distress.
Inside, they found an uninhabitable environment: feces and rotting garbage strewn throughout, along with a putrid odor. No one was found in the house, but based on the conditions and the neighbor’s statement that the homeowner hadn’t been seen in weeks, the dog was removed for its safety.
The Humane Society took Louie to their shelter, where he was evaluated and placed in a clean kennel. Staff noted the dog’s toenails were severely overgrown, making it painful for him to walk.
Keyser was identified as the homeowner and Louie’s owner, and was subsequently charged with animal cruelty and neglect, a misdemeanor. He is scheduled to appear in Canandaigua Town Court to answer the charge. Louie will remain at the shelter as the legal process continues.
