The Portland Sea Dogs is celebrating another Maine cultural tradition with new alternate uniforms. The baseball team unveiled their alternate identity Wednesday morning: the Maine Candlepins. The athletes will wear the specially designed jerseys and hats that pay homage to the unique New England bowling variation during a home game against the Erie SeaWolves on Aug. 2. “Candlepin bowling is a beloved throw-back game for generations of Mainers,” Sea Dogs President Geoff Iacuessa said. “It is as much a Maine staple as lobster, whoopie pies, and Moxie. We are excited to feature this unique variation of bowling for the generations of Mainers who have played the game and to introduce the sport to fans who might not be familiar with this form of bowling.”Candlepin bowling is unique to New England and is played with a smaller ball and tall, narrow pins. It’s been a popular sport since the 1880s. Fans of both sports are invited to a Maine Candlepins launch party Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Big 20 Bowling Center in Scarborough to bowl, meet Slugger and talk baseball.
