Fire in Lower Ninth Ward kills three dogs, displaces seven residents

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – A two-alarm fire that raged through a Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood claimed the lives of three pet dogs and displaced seven residents on two streets, the New Orleans Fire Department said Tuesday (March 18).

Five structures were destroyed in the fire that broke out around 4:19 p.m. and took 50 firefighters manning 18 NOFD units about an hour to bring under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the NOFD said, but officials said it appeared to have started in or near a trailer parked at 1024 Charbonnet St.

The NOFD said the single-family home at that address was almost completely involved in flames when the first firefighters arrived on scene, five minutes after being dispatched. Those units immediately sounded a second alarm for more assistance, given how close the burning house was to others on the same street and the street behind it.

The fire spread to houses on both sides of the original burning structure, which housed two people who were not home at the time. Another couple escaped the house on the right at 1028-30 Charbonnet, but was unable to save three pet dogs in the home. An elderly man escaped from the house to the left at 1020-22 Charbonnet, but his house also was rendered uninhabitable.

Behind the original fire, two houses at 1025 and 1027 Lamanche Street also burned or sustained radiant heat damage. An elderly couple at the latter address also escaped, but was displaced when the home was deemed unsafe to occupy.

The NOFD said it was assisted by the St. Bernard Parish Fire Department, which was dispatched to the flames and smoke reported near the parish line.

No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.
