PIEDMONT, Ala. (WBRC) – An East Alabama couple are accused of leaving 15 dogs inside a home alongside other dead dogs. Danny Lane and Penny Lane were arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

Captain Falon Hurst with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office says they made the gruesome discovery while serving an eviction warrant.
Captain Hurst says when deputies arrived, they realized the people once living at the home at 871 Meadow Ridge Drive had abandoned the property.
During the search of the home deputies found over a dozen dogs abandoned, left inside with other dead dogs. Outside there were other dogs just roaming around the property. Captain Hurst described the scene as having deplorable living conditions.
“Some had already passed away. They were varying in ages. Some were older dogs fully grown, some of them were puppies, some of them were little puppies. She contacted animal Control; animal control came out and took control of a bunch of the dogs. They had all kinds of medical conditions and different shapes of the dogs or physical shapes of the dogs,” said Hurst.
Captain Hurst says the Lanes have since bonded out of jail. The dogs have been removed from the property and taken to a shelter.
