The people have spoken when it comes to America’s favorite dogs!
The American Kennel Club (AKC), the world’s largest purebred dog registry, revealed on Tuesday, March 18, that the French bulldog is the AKC’s most popular breed for the third year in a row. The AKC determines the list based on the number of dogs registered with the organization for each breed.
The French bulldog was named leader of the pack in 2022, 2023, and now, 2024. Before the French bulldog took over the top spot, the Labrador retriever was the most popular breed for 31 years in a row. According to the AKC, Labs shouldn’t expect to regain the top spot anytime soon.
“The playful and adaptable French bulldog’s popularity shows no signs of slowing,” the organization said in its press release announcing the news.

“The Frenchie has solidified itself as America’s sweetheart, and it’s no surprise why,” Gina DiNardo, the AKC’s executive secretary, added in the release. “They are fabulous companions for a variety of people.”
The Labrador retriever once took second spot on the most popular breeds list for 2024, while the golden retriever took the third place spot. The German shepherd and poodle placed in the fourth an fifth on the list, respectively.
The final spots in the top 10 had a bit of a shakeup compared to the 2023 list. While the dachshund kept its sixth place spot, the bulldog climbed up two positions from last year, snagging 7. The move caused the beagle and rottweiler breeds to fall down to 8 and 9, respectively. The German shorthaired pointer rounded out the top 10, holding on to its position from last year.

While there weren’t many drastic changes to the top 10, the AKC said that it has seen a considerable growth in popularity for the Cane Corso dog breed. The organization noted that since its recognition as a dog breed in 2010, the Cane Corso has “been quietly climbing the charts.”

The AKC added that registrations for this breed have increased 414% in the past decade, and the dog has climbed a whopping 33 spots on the most popular breeds list, moving from 47th in 2014 to 14th in 2024.
According to DiNardo, the Cane Corso dog breed “is one to watch” as it has “consistently increased in popularity since becoming recognized.”
“Corsi are majestic and intensely loyal, but not for everyone,” she shared in the release. “As with any breed, we can’t stress enough the importance of doing your research to find the right breed for your lifestyle and to ensure that you’re getting a well-bred dog from a responsible breeder.”
Other dog breeds that have seen a surge in popularity over the last decade include the Boykin Spaniel, which rose from 108 in 2014 to 65 in 2024, and the Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever, which rose from 99 in 2014 to 69 in 2024.
As for dogs that have risen in popularity year-to-year, these include the Staffordshire bull terrier, which moved up from 72 to 62, and the Chinese crested, which moved up from 79 to 68. The American Eskimo dog, Bracco Italiano, and German pinscher have also seen rank increases.
