ALEXANDRIA, VA — It may be your lucky day to find a furry companion to bring home.
The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is hosting a “Adopt Me, I’m Irish” event with waived adoption fees for dogs 40 or more pounds. The adoption event runs from Friday, March 14 to St. Patrick’s Day, Monday, March 17.

Larger breed dogs often have longer stays at animal shelters in the U.S., according to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. However, the organization says large dogs typically bark less than small breed dogs and have milder personalities and higher tolerance for young children. A study by the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna found that big dogs tend to do better with obedience, aggression and excitability, and anxiety and fearfulness.
However, considerations for adopting big dogs may include a higher cost for food, heartworm, flea and tick prevention; bigger beds, crates, toys and other items; the need for more exercise; the need for training to avoid jumping on people; physical strength needed to handle a big dog; more difficulty traveling with a larger dog; and apartment pet restrictions.
Although some apartments restrict some dog sizes and breeds, the animal shelter says some large dogs can fit well in apartments and may not require a lot of exercise.
One of the available pets is Max, who is the “Royal Dog of the Month” that is sponsored by Royal Restaurant. His adoption fees are waived through the end of March.
Here’s more information on Max:
Max is a 2-year-old, 82-pound stunning shepherd mix. He is a friendly and social dog. Max gets very excited to see other dogs and is working on his enthusiastic greetings. He has had a few playdates with other pups, too. He likes to stay active and busy — food puzzles and sniffwork help keep him mentally tired. A rousing game of fetch is one of his favorite activities.
