FORSYTH, Ga. — A disturbing discovery at Shady Oaks Mobile Home Park in Forsyth has raised concerns over animal cruelty after several dead dogs were found just weeks after a couple was evicted for having too many animals.
Shannon Kirkpatrick was in her backyard when her husband found a bag full of dead dogs near their home.
“I smell it, I can see it if I look over here. It’s nasty,” Kirkpatrick said.
The discovery was found after neighbors Stephen Darrell Jones and Lisa Ann Murray were evicted for having too many animals. The landlord confirmed their identities.
This is not the first time Jones and Murray have been in trouble for animal cruelty. In 2015, the couple was charged after 50 live and dead animals were found in their Macon home.
Kirkpatrick and her family, who rescued some of the surviving animals at the mobile home, are now calling attention to the inhumane conditions the dogs were left in.
While some dogs were found dead, others were left starving. Kirkpatrick believes that the owners never thought anyone would uncover the evidence of their neglect.
Donna Gurol, who had often helped Jones and Murray feed their animals, expressed her disgust over how the dogs were abandoned.
“Very disgusted, very hurt – how anybody can treat another living thing that can’t speak up for itself?” Gurol said.
Both Kirkpatrick and Gurol contacted animal services, but no action had been taken as of the time of the discovery.
“I just want something to be done. They said they had the 50 animal cruelty charges against them. you would think they would jump on this,” Kirkpatrick added.
Neighbors are also frustrated by the delay in action. Animal control was supposed to come test the dogs for the cause of death, but over a week has passed with no response.
Meanwhile, the landlord of the mobile home park is working to improve the area. The landlord said they are in the process of fixing up the park, including demolishing old homes to make the community a safer and better place for residents.
