East Texas family to be reunited with missing dog found in Galveston animal cruelty case

GALVESTON, Texas – On Monday, 71 dogs, cats and puppies were rescued after being found in deplorable conditions on a school bus in Galveston Island State Park. On Tuesday, the Galveston Island Humane Society said they found three of the dogs had microchips and one dog had a rabies tag. They were able to identify all four dogs, A’rhx, Bentley, Pyros and Cheyenne.

KiShun Bradley tells KPRC 2 Reporter Corley Peel her family was shocked when they received a text from the humane society saying A’rhx had been found. She said her 21-year-old son, who has special needs, was excited knowing his best friend is coming home.

“My son has speech problems and A’rhx is one of the things that he can say. So, I’m glad that now he could say his name and actually see him at the same time, versus saying his name and not being able to see him,” said Bradley.

Bradley said A’rhx and their other dog, KC, were missing for two months. The East Texas family said the dogs got out while staying at a family members home. According to Bradley, a woman claiming to have a no-kill shelter picked them up. Bradley said the woman convinced their family member to turn over the dogs. Their family tried getting their dogs back from the woman.

“She just started playing games with us. Wanted to come do welfare checks at the home but never showed up. They would just give us the runaround every time we called,” said Bradley.

Bradley felt hopeless until A’rhx was found in Galveston. Officials said a witness called 911 after spotting dozens of animals stuffed in crates on a school bus. The crates were filled with urine and feces. Authorities said a woman who had the 71 animals, surrendered them to police. The animals were taken to both the Galveston Island Humane Society and Houston SPCA. Bradley said she hardly recognized A’rhx’s face in his rescue photo.

“It makes me mad. It’s heartbreaking. You think people that rescue animals, that’s in their heart. So, they have good intentions. But, I mean, if those were her intentions, if she wasn’t able to care for them or if she just had other motives other than just doing things out of the kindness of her heart, she should have just left all the animals where they were,” said Bradley.

The woman involved in the animal cruelty investigation has not been identified, investigators said charges have not been filed at this time. At this time, Its unclear if the woman being investigated is the same woman who initially picked up Bradley’s dogs.

Bradley said her family plans to pick up A’rhx this weekend. Unfortunately, KC is still missing. The Galveston Island Humane Society said the rescued animals are still being evaluated and are not ready for adoption at this time. They will notify the public once they become available. The director of GIHS said the staff, volunteers, veterinarian and investigators have been working tirelessly to save the animals.
