The Animal Rescue League of Iowa removed 49 living and 17 dead dogs from a commercial breeding facility in Washington County in eastern Iowa on Friday.
Animal Rescue League officials arrived at the undisclosed property to find 49 dogs and puppies living in unsanitary conditions in multiple buildings, officials said in a news release on Tuesday. Seventeen dogs, mostly puppies, were found dead around the property.
A state-certified veterinarian at the scene determined that all dogs had to be removed for their own well-being, the statement said.
The ARL’s rescue team moved the dogs to clean kennels. They are now being treated and cared for at the Animal Rescue League and the PAWS & More Animal Shelter in Washington County, the news release said.
The case is being investigated by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, which was not immediately available for comment.
