Colerain Twp. condemns county dog warden response to ‘vicious’ dog attack

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WXIX) – Colerain Township officials expressed their concerns with the response of the Hamilton County Dog Wardens after a woman was mauled by two dogs and another person was injured Friday.

According to a statement from township trustees Cathy Ulrich, Daniel Unger, Matt Wahlert, fiscal officer Jeffrey Baker and administrator Jeff Weckbach, Hamilton County Dog Warden staff told Colerain police that they chose to leave the dogs at the residence because they were “too vicious” to be taken in.

Additionally, officials are asking the Hamilton County Commissioners to look into the dog warden team’s policies and their response to the incident, claiming that “if the dog warden is not equipped to deal with dangerous animals, then the dog warden is derelict in its duties.”

The dog attack happened March 7 on Apple Valley Court around 4 p.m.

Neighbors previously told FOX19 NOW’s Allie Hennard that the woman was walking on her street when the two dogs got loose from their backyard and began attacking her.

Jason Stumtin, a resident in the neighborhood, said he heard screaming and saw the attack happen.

“I called 911 and loaded a shotgun to go out and try and help her,” Stumin explained. “By that time the dogs were attacking another neighbor in the street. Then we heard the police sirens shortly after that and the dogs scattered.”

The woman’s mother, Carrie Davis, says the dogs should be removed from the property.

“My grandson saw the end of the attack and is extremely upset and distraught,” Davis said. “It was a full-blown, vicious attack.”

Ohio law states that if a person is bit by a dog, the dog is subject to a 10-day quarantine. However, the dog does not have to be quarantined in a pound, shelter or kennel and the county dog warden does not have to remove it from its residence.

The quarantine period is supposed to be under the supervision of the health commissioner.

Additionally, no one is allowed to kill the dog until the quarantine period is over unless it is to prevent further injury, the dog is diseased or it is seriously hurt, the law says.

FOX19 NOW reached out to Cincinnati Animal CARE for comment, but have not heard back yet.
