Staff film truck dumping 2 dogs outside California shelter—”Broke my heart”

A shocking case of animal abandonment in Kern County, California, has prompted fury online after a video of two dogs being dumped outside a rescue went viral on TikTok.

In a video posted earlier this week by @pawfect_pup232 that has over 12 million views, two Belgian Malinois dogs were being dumped outside Lucky’s Crew Animal Rescue in Bakersfield. The driver of a pickup truck let the dogs out of the car and drove away, leaving them alone on the road.

Kelly Gould, general manager at Lucky’s Crew Animal Rescue, told Newsweek: “There is an overwhelming crisis of overpopulation, dumping, and backyard breeding in our area. The municipal shelters and local rescues are bursting at the seams, and resources are stretched thin. We are all doing the best we can to combat this daunting challenge.”

On TikTok, users rushed to share their reactions, with @DogMomOnAMission writing: “Report to the police it’s illegal, poor dogs are skin and bones.”

While Emii0915 added: “As a former shelter employee, people do this all the time. Some will call to ask, be told no, and drop them off on the doorstep. I like them being at the shelter rather than something worse.”

“The fact they were so malnourished and still begging not to be left,” user @thatgirlyjay commented to which @pawfect_pup232 replied: “I know it broke my heart. We don’t deserve animals.”

Despite their mission to provide sanctuary and care for abandoned, abused, and neglected animals, Lucky’s Crew was unable to house the two dumped Malinois due to overcrowding.

The organization currently has 55 dogs in its care, well over its 40-dog capacity. After reporting abandonment to the local police department and county animal services, the two dogs were turned over to Kern County Animal Services where they are awaiting further evaluation by Belgian Malinois rescue groups.

Newsweek reached out to Kern County Animal Services and Kern County Sheriff’s Office via email for comment.

“There has been a lot of interest in them due to the video circulating,” Gould said. “We have been told that some Belgian Malinois rescues will be evaluating them this weekend, so there are high hopes that they will be saved. But there are hundreds of other animals in our city and county who deserve the same attention and efforts to save their lives.”

The response to the video has been overwhelming, and Gould hopes that it will help raise awareness for all animals that need homes in the area.

“We chose to share the video publicly in hopes of spreading awareness of the dire situation for animals here locally,” Gould said. “This is just a glimpse of what we and other rescues see and deal with daily.”

Lucky’s Crew Animal Rescue urges the community to step up by adopting, fostering, volunteering, and donating to help alleviate the burden on shelters.

“These animals deserve a chance at a better life,” Gould emphasized. “We need the community’s help to make that happen.”

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
